"Camino" is a challenging and visually striking video game that draws on elements of Afro-Surrealism and the history of colonization in Cuba. As the lead artist, narrative designer, and director of this indie project, I was responsible for visualizing the game's world and bringing its story to life. Working with a small team of developers, I brought my experience and expertise in Photoshop and Unity to create a visually stunning and engaging experience for players.
As someone with a rich and complex heritage, I was excited to work on a project that allowed me to explore my Yoruba roots and incorporate elements of the Orisha gods into the game. Growing up with a deep appreciation for the traditions and history of Cuba, I was passionate about creating a video game that would celebrate the island's unique cultural heritage and explore its long history of resistance to colonization.
One of the many challenges of "Camino" was how to balance the aesthetic and storytelling elements with the game design itself. Drawing inspiration from both traditional storytelling and stylized art, I worked to create a visual language that was both distinctive and accessible, allowing players to easily immerse themselves in the world of the game. Additionally, I collaborated with my team to develop gameplay mechanics that would be challenging and engaging, while also rewarding players who carefully managed their resources and used the environment to their advantage.
Ultimately, "Camino" represents not only a significant milestone for my creative career but also an opportunity to contribute to the rich cultural legacy of Cuba and its history of fighting against colonization. I am confident that players who engage with this game will find it both stimulating and moving, and I look forward to continuing to create art that explores the intersections of art, culture, and technology.
